In this friendly, I was trying out my 4-1-2-1-2 formation for the first time.

4-2-1-2- Diamond

Both fullbacks were given a high attacking mentality and were instructed to hug the line, bombing down the flanks and provide the necessary width that this formation lacks. Since the fullbacks functioned more like a wingback, the defenders were asked to defend deep(marked by the white rectangle) and mark the zone instead. The defensive midfielder works together with the defensive to act as an anchorman to deny balls from reaching the opposing strikers.

Midfield works in a narrow diamond formation to retain possession and knock the ball around until there is an opening for the AMC. As you can see from the picture above of the match against Castell Alun, there are many attacking options for the AMC once he gets the ball. 1.) To play the ball into the box for the two waiting strikers, 2.) To push the ball out to the flanks so that the fullback can deliver a cross, and 3.) To dribble into the box himself for striking options.

Although this tactic works well offensively, the scoreline shows us that there are glaring problems in the defenses. Two of the goals were scored from counter-attacks which is a huge problem since there are only two defenders at the back and if one of them gets beaten, the opposing strikers will outnumber the people at the back. While Timothy does his role well of pressuring and winning balls in the middle of the park, his slow pace means that he is often unable to arrive back in time during a counter-attack.
